HOW TO INSTALL MOZILLA FIREFOX 3.0 UNDER UBUNTU LINUX?

These instructions are tested under Ubuntu 7.10, but probabely they work on other versions of Ubuntu or other Linux distros, too.

Before starting, perhaps you’ll want to backup your ~/.mozilla folder, first. Just copy (drag-n-drop) it to any other folder.

So, open the Terminal or something similar, and type instructions given bellow one by one. After the first “sudo”, you’ll need the root password, so if you are not root or don’t know the root password, installation will not continue. Don’t type initial numbers

1. sudo apt-get install libstdc++5
2. Download Mozilla Firefox 3.0 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ and change the working directory to that where you saved the file (for example, if you saved to Desktop, then type: cd Desktop).
3. sudo tar -C /opt -jxvf firefox-3.0.tar.bz2
4. cd /opt/firefox/plugins/
5. sudo ln -s /usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/plugins/*
6. sudo dpkg-divert –divert /usr/bin/firefox.ubuntu –rename /usr/bin/firefox
7. sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox
8. sudo dpkg-divert –divert /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox.ubuntu –rename /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox
9. sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/mozilla-firefox

That’s all.

HOW TO SHOW BACK (UNHIDE) SHORTCUT ARROWS IN WINDOWS XP?

I installed a windows optimizer, as my laptop went too slow. It did wonderful job, but after rebooting, I saw that there are no arrows on the shortcuts on my desktop. As my desktop is 90% full with various icons, this was very bad for me. To be honest, for shortcuts, it showed the location of the file when I pointed over the icons, but on the first sight, it was impossible to know whether the icon refers to a file who is on the desktop or it’s a shortcut.

I tried some standard things, but with no success. This is Windows, so when something goes bad, it’s really bad

Whell, after that I installed some tools downloaded from Microsoft. No success again.
I surfed the web for solution and found that there are zillions of web sites teaching how to get rid of the shortcut arrows, but there is no single web-site with instructions for showing back (unhiding) shortcut arrows in Windows XP. I am curious why people don’t want the arrows?

OK. I understood that I have to fix the problem by myself. So, here are the very simple instructions which helped me:

1. Run regedit (Start > Run… > (type) regedit > OK)

2. If you are not sure what you are doing, it’s a good idea to backup the registry file before proceeding. But relax. These steps are too easy and safe

3. Click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (on left window)

4. Go down, find and click to lnkfile (the first letter is L).

5. On the right window, right-click your mouse and click on New, then String Value.

6. Type the name for the new string value: IsShortcut and press Enter.

7. Exit regedit.

8. Reboot.

And that’s all

This is done only in Windows XP. It works perfectly and it’s perfectly safe.

Unfortunately, last few weeks this blog was under heavy attack of spammers. There were 5000 comments (read: spams) for the posts here.

Akismet (the spam protection for Wordpress) was not activated, so I had to delete all of them manualy.

I cleaned for 3 (three) days!!!

During this operation, I also deleted all the “normal” comments, as it was annoying to look on every single comment. It was hard to check 5000 comments just to keep very few normal ones.

Really, I don’t know what spammers think of, but who really clicks on the spam comments and who really buy something for real money from them??? They are just wasting their and our time and energy.

Stop spam forever!

After Castro - Castro?

During communist-era Yugoslavia, there was a cheer: “After Tito - Tito”.

But, as one German woman said many years before, “Tito kaput, Yugoslavia kaput”. There was no another Tito after Tito. Tito’s values were discontinued in his own country, Yugoslavia.

The result was, many bloody wars.

These days one of the top topics in the United States is the health of Cuban president, Fidel Castro. News agencies reported that Castro is “very alive and very alert”.

Castro is almost 80. What after him? Many anti-Americans, anti-globalist, anti-westerners think that after Castro, there’ll be Castro, again. Castro is a synonym for communism in Cuba.

No, no, no. Castro case will be closed with his death. After Castro, there will be a “revolution” for freedom.

United States are too close to be ignored.

Why to experiment? They have just to import the American style, values and freedom.

On verb “evetle-” in Turkish dialect of Skopje

The verb “evetle-” is used in Turkish dialect of Skopje (Macedonia) as equivalent for “haste, hurry”. At first look, it seems that it’s consisted of two morphemes:

evet+ (noun root)

+le- (denominative suffix for verbalization)

“evet” means “yes” in Turkish. So, there is no link between “yes” and “haste, hurry”.

The only explanation is that the root originaly was not “evet”, but “ivedi”, which means “hurry, haste”:

ivedi+le- > iveti+le- > eveti+le > evet(i)+le- > evet+le-

Its usage is very frequent in the Turkish dialect of Skopje.
